Designing and Building an Original Educational Game of Scientific Inquiry

In the fall of 2020, I participated in the most complex and comprehensive educational technology project of my time in this program in EME 6613 Development of Technology Based Instruction. Dr. Lucille Moon-Michel guided teams of students through the instructional design process from start to finish. We created an educational game based upon science curriculum lessons for the traditional face-to-face middle school classroom. Our task was to adapt the content of a curriculum unit into a computer-based learning experience by applying online learning theory and gamification principles to our project while being sure to align objectives with the state's science standards. We chose to use Articulate Storyline 360 to design our game, and we also had to follow Meyer's Principals of Multimedia Design throughout its design.

Our team selected a unit about the bald eagle. Working with this team was one of the most successful and positive collaborative experiences I have ever had. Some team members had more design experience than other, particularly with Articulate Storyline 360. My role was as a co-designer with the following responsiblities: the assessment questions in the game, instructional and motivational feedback to user responses, audio special effects and soundtracks, editing and revising narrative, and coordination of group meetings and communications. I write more extensively about this project in my Reflection page in this portfolio.
